It’s not every day Doc Searls is quoted on page 4 in a european tabloid

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

Doc Searls’s comments regarding the royal princess pseudoblogs done by the danish cancer foundation is today quoted in an article in the danish tabloid BT.
Update: After closer reading it appears that the quote really should be contributed to Jon Froda whom Doc Searls quoted on his blog. Reality is difficult to capture - both for print journalists and bloggers.

Doc Searls on The Danish Cancer Society

Monday, November 7th, 2005

As a follow-up to my entry about The Danish Cancer Society - Doc Searls, cluetrain co-author and thinker extraordinaire highlights the effort to get The Danish Cancer Society to do real blogs or abandon the use of the term. There’s something not bloggy in Denmark

When Blogging isn’t Blogging

Friday, November 4th, 2005

Been meaning to blog in english about this for some time - but Jon Froda have done a nice writeup that makes that unnecessary.
The danish blogosphere is buzzing about how one of the largest non profits in Denmark, The Danish Cancer Society, is misusing the word and concept weblog by promoting a third person written news blurb as a blog written by the ever popular crown princess Mary - literally naming it “Crown Princess Mary’s Blog”.
Their head of communication, a guy with a strong broadcast background, isn’t even willing to engage in a conversation concerning the issue.
In the mean while a search for “kræftens bekæmpelse” the danish term for the cancer society all ready has this bad story as search item no. 9 on Google.
It’s as oldschool as it gets. Misusing the “new” term of weblogs for some presumeable funkiness and street cred - and then not even being willing to engage in a conversation about it.
And yeah, worth engaging in this since the concept of a weblog won’t mean anything if people start using it for sites like this.

Dave Winer at his best!

Scripting News: Like a BloggerCon
“Later this week Google will have their invite-only Zeitgeist conference. It’s as closed as a conference can be. And this is the company we lifted on our shoulders and held up as a shining example of the web at its best. We were wrong to do that, but forgive us for having hope. At some core level Google did understand the web, but there was also a lot about Google that was against the web, and now that’s most of what they are.”

Ahh, classic Dave Winer rant - so true, so true. Was worried for a moment that Dave was drinking the silicon valley web2.0 kool aid - but then he rants the web way. The web way is recognizing that the world is larger than your little site, your little organization, your needs and acting accordingly. Acting like you live in a world that’s larger than yourself and your little ecosystem (sounds obvious, but it’s difficult).
It’s creating common infrastructure - and open field for sharing, competition and conversations.

This is what’s working at the core infrastructure level of the internet, it’s whats working in terms of “the world wide web” and it’s whats working in the blogosphere.

And this is nowhere in the definitions of a meme that someone calls web2.0 (btw, i here by pledge never to use that word again on this blog).
