TV2 Wikipedia Gate
The attacks on participatory culture/models gets more and more bizarre.
Yesterday the main morning news show ran a story about how anyone can edit wikipedia. They make fun of a world where everyone can participate and spread fear about how dangerous it can be.
To prove the point they humorously tried to show that they had edited the hosts’ own wikipedia entries with some prank statements. Like small bullies in kindergarden doing it on national television – f*** with our collective creation Wikipedia. Arrogance is a small word for it.
What they actually we’re showing we’re cached versions of the edit they made – since the edit they did actually was reverted back in 4 minutes. So at the time of the broadcast they’re stating that this is their wikipedia entries – when the entries we’re corrected the day before.
They make fun of Wikipedia and try to prove a point – when actually it was Wikipedia’s finest hour. Wikipedia showing how strong a collective participatory system can be.
They probably think they we’re just doing something funny – when in essence they’re we’re falsifying what their wikipedia entries we’re and whether Wikipedia can heal itself – and trying to game Wikipedia instead of contributing to it.
Participatory culture needs to stand up for itself. But then – first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, you win.

The “TV2 Wikipedia Gate” is much more serious that one might think at a first glance.
First, it is about two journalists, who bring to the public information, that they both know is not correct. This is against the “rules of good press practise” in Denmark (Danish: Vejledende Regler for God Presseskik), which means, that they both have broken the professional ethical rules.
Second, they have misinformed the public, which is clearly against the law of media responsability (Danish: medieansvarsloven) paragraph 34 p. 1 among others.
Third, the attack was on Wikipedia, a public and free information source. Important here is the fact, that the organization behind TV2 releases an alternative product in this area (Lademanns leksikon), which means, that they have a direct economical interest in making the competitive Wikipedia stand forward as unreliable.
It means, that three parties may be accused for criminal activities:
1) the journalists themselves,
2) the responsable board of the television station,
3) Egmont, the compagny behind TV2 Go Morgen programme.
To claim that this was just for fun could be compared with a person, who rob a bank and – when court – claims: “it was just for fun and to prove that it might happen”. No judge would accept such an explanation.
The other side of this is off-course, that – if not condemmed – it sets a new standard where lies might be accepted as “good journalism”.
The final outcome of this affair will be quite interesting.
